| From the Management Desk |
| Dear Readers, Welcome to the October 08 edition of the “AIL Newsletter”!! |
October saw many interesting and entertaining events. One of the main highlights being the “Deepavali”, which is a colourful festival that is celebrated by all Hindus around the globe, also known as the “festival of lights”. This festival usually falls around late October/November. One important practice that the Hindus follow during this festival is to light oil lamps in their homes on Deepavali. By lighting the oil lamps, the Hindus are thanking the gods for the happiness, knowledge, peace and wealth that they have received. The Hindus consider Deepavali as one of the most important festivals to celebrate. |
There is even an interesting legend behind the Deepavali festival. The story goes that Narakasura, a demon, ruled the kingdom of Pradyoshapuram. Under his rule, the villagers suffered a lot of hardship as the demon tortured the people and kidnapped the women to be imprisoned in his palace. Seeing his wickedness, “Lord Krishna” set out to destroy the demon and the day Narakasura died was celebrated as Deepavali. |
| Visiting Hindus during Deepavali will be an interesting activity, as you will get to taste a wide variety of delicious food. In every home that you visit you are bound to be served with a tempting spread of sweets. |

Bollywood Downunder October 2008 by Sandip Hor |

It’s getting close. The curtain is almost ready to be raised. I can hear the vibrant rhythms of tabla. I can visualise Ustad Zakir Hussain on centre stage , dressed in sherwani, sitting cross legged with his fingers creating magic on a pair of tabla. He is not alone. He is surrounded by other talented musicians - Niladri Kumar on Sitar , Abbos Kosimovon on Doyra, Khete Khan on Khartal, Dilshad Khan on Sarengi, and Navin Sharma on Dholak
And what about the audience?
They are all enclosed in an envelope of sensational melodies and tunes that takes them to a world of music where there is nothing but hums, jingles and beats, high and low. I am not dreaming. I am just creating a scene that I expect to be unfolded on Sunday 8 November 2008 at the main concert Hall of Sydney Opera House, when king of percussion Ustad more details |

A place where the poor can be rich By Romayne de Alwis |

|
Anti-poverty week in Australia falls in the middle of October and it is good for those who have the good things in life to remember that not everyone has access to even basic necessities. Around 80 per cent of humanity lives on less than $10/= a day and half the world – over 3 billion people – live on less than $2.50 a day. A sobering thought indeed.
It is a world where the richest 20 per cent of the world’s population account for 75 per cent of the world’s income, and poverty is widespread - not merely confined to the Third World. I remember being shocked by the homeless in Washington DC during my stay in USA – people sleeping on park benches in summer or over the grates in winter. I had always thought
