| Dear Readers, Welcome to the September edition of the AIL Newsletter! |
September saw many interesting and entertaining events. One of the main highlights being the Para Olympics. It is one of the most popular events of the world, involving people with different physical abilities. They show off their courage, determination and shear strength competing in many sports. This tournament is organized by the IOC and has a large amount of talented athletes participating in a variety of sports. The history of the Para Olympics goes back to the years after the end of the Second World War. In the year 1948, a sports competition involving World War II soldiers with spinal cord injuries was organized in Stoke Mandeville in England by Sir Ludwig Guttmann. |
The competition organized by Sir Guttmann gradually developed and culminated into the Para Olympic games of the present days. A large number of athletes and players from different countries of the world participate in these games. The number of participant countries is on a rise and from 23 in 1960, it had touched as many as 136 in the year 2004. Some of the major sports, which have been included in the Para Olympic Games, are Ice Sledge Hockey, Biathlon, Swimming and Weightlifting. Australia won total number 79 medals, what an achievement!!
