Australia - International visitor numbers drop: tourism body

Updated - 9/12/2008 - abc news online.

Australia’s peak tourism body says it is not surprised the number of international tourists visiting Australia has dropped.

Figures released yesterday showed there were 16,000 fewer visitors to Australia in October.

The biggest drop was the Japanese market, however the number of New Zealanders visiting has increased.

Olivia Wirth from the Tourism and Transport Forum says the global financial crisis is to blame, not Australia’s marketing strategy.

"We see this as a result of the economic climate," she said.

"We saw forward bookings for holidays for many of our key international tourism markets such as the US and the UK start to fall off at the beginning of the year as they’re economies, their home economies started to shrink."

Ms Wirth says Japan’s economy has been hit hard.

"Japan has been a market that’s been struggling for some time," she said.

"Tourists to Australia peaked about five years ago and since then we’ve seen a steady decline of Japanese tourists to Australia."
