Kim Stanley Robinson still betting on utopia Updated - 6/9/2010 - abc news online.
Acclaimed science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson has told the 68th World Science Fiction Convention in Melbourne that he is still optimistic about the world’s future. Robinson, whose Science in the Capital trilogy told of a world hit by the catastrophic effects of global warming, used his AussieCon 4 guest of honour speech to talk about the importance of utopian science fiction and his hopes for the future. "We’re heading for a utopian future," he said. "And I say that because it’s either utopia or a really severe catastrophe. "The powers of human science and ingenuity are such that even despite this strangely dangerous situation we’re in I have full confidence that people will for their own sakes and for their children’s sakes, will get a grip and, even if it’s 51 per cent, even if it’s a hung parliament with a lot of dealings to pull a few more people into the fold, that’s all you need."
