Human Centipede pushes horror film boundaries

A horror film expert says the premise of a new Dutch film might be so nauseating and reprehensible that audiences reject it.

The Human Centipede follows a German doctor who kidnaps two young American women and a Japanese man before surgically joining them together, mouth to anus, so they share a single digestive tract.

High-profile American film critic Roger Ebert refused to give the film a star rating, saying it "occupies a world where the stars don’t shine".

Dr Mark Ryan, research associate and lecturer in creative industries at the Queensland University of Technology, says there is a spectrum of responses associated with the horror genre.

"It starts at the boundaries of the thriller, which relies upon suspense and tension, all the way up to terror," he said.
